Mubarak Resigns - Making History Come Alive for Students

Just a few days ago, we were discussing where we were when the Space Shuttle exploded. We all recounted how we knew we were witnessing history.

As the citizens of Egypt organized to let their wishes be known to their government, my 6th grade students were completing their ancient civilizations projects.

In all, there are five ancient civilizations represented, each with a historical figure running for the role of Ultimate Leader.

Students researched events in the history of the countries, examined the impact of the leaders, and made connections to current events. They created TV commercials, print campaigns, and theme songs. The entire grade 'registered' for the privilege of voting in tomorrow's election.

As the news of Mubarak's resignation reached the media center, the students paused for a moment and then spontaneously cheered. I know for certain that these students will remember where they were when they heard the news. They just witnessed history. What an amazing thing!
